St Hild and St Bede College

Hild Bede Boat Club

Hild Bede Boat Club is one of the largest and most competitive clubs within the college and across the university. We regularly compete in Durham and beyond, with racing highlights including the Head of the River Races and Durham Regatta.

This past year has seen a huge growth in numbers, as we boast our largest novice program in the last 4 years, as well as some of the best novice and senior results we have had in recent times.

Our senior squads remain very competitive, picking up wins from 7 different events this year. Highlights include winning the Open 4+ and 8+ at Derwentwater Head, two wins at Hexham Regatta for our Women’s 2x and our Mixed 8+, and winning on home turf at Durham Regatta in the Open Int 8+.

We welcome rowers and coxes of all levels to the club, and many of our novices progress to the senior squad and join the ranks of those who have rowed or coxed previously.

We are a friendly and welcoming group, with regular socials for the whole club, as well as squads running their own. Highlights of our social calendar would be our Boat Club Ball in February, our beach trip in summer and all the post-race socials! Our alumni are active too, with our Alumni Club (Armitage Boat Club) hosting drink receptions and a dinner each year. This year at Durham Regatta, they also entered and raced a 4+.

We are fortunate enough to boast some excellent equipment, including a brand-new landing stage, a Hudson 8+, a Stampfli 4+ and 6 ergs of our own for unrestricted training (one of the few clubs that have this privilege). Although the club primarily focuses on sweeping in 4s and 8s, we do have a whole host of other boats to allow members to train and race in the single, double, pair and quad.
