Novice Head

Novice Head

Date: Saturday 22nd February 2025

Time: Division 1 (W): 12:00, Division 2 (O) 14:30

Novice Head is the second event for Durham College Rowing’s novice crews.

This 1.8 km upstream time trial takes place on the River Wear, following a course that starts at Count’s House, passes through the arches of Elvet Bridge, and finishes at the regatta start line – the same as Durham Small Boats Head.

In contrast to the side-by-side racing format at Novice Cup, Novice Head is a time trial, with crews setting of at intervals and competing for the fastest time. This format often leads to exciting moments, including overtakes and close finishes, as crews navigate the challenging course.

The narrow arches under Elvet Bridge are a highlight of the race, requiring skill and precision for the fastest times.

The best locations for spectators include:

  • The Racecourse: The final stretch of the course, where crews give their all in a sprint to the finish line.
  • Elvet Bridge: Watch crews squeeze through the narrow arches, loosing as little time as possible.
